As suggested by the title of her new cycle, Tatjana Politeo is searching for something. And her new paintings are filled with traces. Imprints of rollers, dots, stains, and lines form simple compositions. They appear somewhat ascetic, even fragile, especially when compared to the richness of colour and materiality of her earlier cycles. Yet what holds them together is the considered logic of their interrelationships—that inner necessity which Kandinsky posited as the foundation of abstract creation and with which many early modernists experimented. These paintings insist on a formal balance of elements, and on their intuitive yet methodical composition. They resemble sketches for fantastic mobiles—structures that seem to hover, simultaneously in motion and in equilibrium.
